OUR PROJECTS
Wolfgang Knoof in an interview
with Stefanie Reschke,
materialraum (Hamburg)
Stefanie Reschke:
How did you come across the topic of furniture wrapping, e.g. in hotels?
Wolfgang Knoof:
We have been the European market leader for the graphic decoration of shopping centres for many years; our largest project covered over 20,000 square metres. I'd had the thought of looking into the hotel market for a while. When orders were postponed due to corona, I was successful in acquiring hotel renovation orders. It happened surprisingly quickly. And that was the start.
Stefanie Reschke:
What is unique about hotel refurbishment contracts?
Wolfgang Knoof:
Hotels are under a lot of pressure from guest reviews on hotel booking portals and on their own websites. In order to achieve optimum occupancy rates at reasonable rental prices, hotels have to be constantly rated very highly. Room quality and lifestyle appeal play a very important role in the ratings. Sure, this costs money, but under-occupancy and falling room rates are more expensive. Hotel chains have analysed this and come to exactly the same conclusion.
Hotels are also obliged to be sustainable. There are certification agencies that assess the sustainability of hotels. Hotels are big consumers of resources. If the furniture is scrapped, this is certainly not a plus point in the rating.
Stefanie Reschke:
You use architectural films for your hotel renovations. What can we expect from this?
Wolfgang Knoof:
Believe it or not, architectural films are high-quality materials with versatile surface designs, otherwise we wouldn't use them. We have around 600 designs to choose from. If you can't find what you're looking for...., then I wouldn't know either. They are specially designed and manufactured for worldwide use, particularly in interior design. They are of such high quality and adhere so perfectly that we can give a guarantee of up to 10 years on the material and our work.
It is also clear that our films can only be applied by experienced professionals. Our installers are not only trained for this job, they are also certified. It is also important to minimise material waste as much as possible. Perfect planning is an important success factor.
Stefanie Reschke:
What is the economic bottom line?
Wolfgang Knoof:
My favourite question! It makes no sense to replace a functional wardrobe with another wardrobe. This applies equally to doors, beds, desks, etc. Dismantling, logistics, waste disposal and new investments swallow up huge sums of money. If we refurbish all these furnishings and fit them professionally with modern surfaces, we can save up to 60 per cent of the costs. And no guest will realise that only the surfaces have been renewed.
Stefanie Reschke:
And the time involved?
Wolfgang Knoof:
Well, it's clear that there's real work involved in comprehensively modernising a hotel with 300 rooms, for example. This is done floor by floor during ongoing operations. When we renovate with architectural films, there is no noise, no dust, no rubbish. Everything is done on the spot; no door is unhinged. We work from 7:00 in the morning until the evening and no guest on another floor notices anything. Let's say we have 5 floors with 60 rooms each. Then we're through after 3.5 months and 4 of the 5 floors have been in operation the whole time and have brought in money. Anyone interested can work out what that would mean for them in a particular case.
